The Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety Course is required by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for all first time driver’s license applicants under the age of 18 under Florida Statute 322.095. This course must be completed before taking the Florida Permit Exam and applying for a learner’s permit in the state of Florida.
The Florida First Time Driver Class, also known as the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) Course or Drug & Alcohol course, is required by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for all first time driver’s license applicants under Florida Statute 322.095 for anyone OVER 18 years old. This course must be completed before taking the Florida Permit Exam and applying for a learner’s permit in the state of Florida. This course is also required for licensed drivers under 21 years of age who have received a notice of suspension for driving under the influence of alcohol. IMPORTANT: As of 8/1/2025 You must be over 18 years old to take this course.
You will select this 50 Question Test if you would like to register for the Official Class E Knowledge Test Online provided by American Safety Institute. Must be under 18 years old to be eligible. Upon successful completion of this test you will be eligible to receive your Florida Restricted or Permit Drivers License at your local office. This exam is provided by an external exam provider. Please note: You must be under the age of 18 years old to take the test online.
This Florida First Time Driver Package includes the 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course, and the Official Online Permit Exam, with a bonus practice exam. The 6-hour DETS Course is required by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for all first-time driver’s license applicants under the age of 18 under Florida Statute 322.095. This course must be completed before taking the Florida Permit Exam and applying for a learner’s permit in the state of Florida. After you complete the 6-hour DETS, you have the option of taking a Permit Practice Test before you take the Official Florida DMV Permit Test Online. Upon successful completion of the official exam, you will be eligible to receive your Florida Restricted or Permit Driver’s License at your local DMV office. The test is approved by the Florida Department Highway Safety Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). The American Safety Institute (ASI) is a 3rd party provider that offers the permit test online.
